About Mastodon

Mastodon is a decentralized social media platform that allows people to share short posts, images, videos, and links, similar to traditional microblogging sites. However, unlike platforms such as Twitter or Facebook that are controlled by a single company, Mastodon is made up of many independent servers that are connected together to form one large social network called the β€œfediverse.”

The platform was created in 2016 by Eugen Rochko, a developer who wanted to build a social network that was not controlled by a single corporation. The first public version launched in October 2016 as an open-source project, allowing anyone to run their own Mastodon server or contribute to its development.

A key feature of Mastodon is its decentralized structure. Instead of signing up to one global website, users join a specific server (called an instance). Each server has its own community rules and moderators, but users can still follow and interact with people on other servers across the network. This approach gives communities more control over moderation and governance.

Mastodon is also open-source, ad-free, and privacy-focused. The platform does not rely on algorithms or advertising to control what users see; posts appear in chronological order and users curate their own feeds. Because the software is open and community-driven, organizations, communities, and individuals can host their own servers and shape how their online social space works.
